He’s become more pragmatic about delivering on what people expect from him as opposed to shirking expectations like 2nd generation performers sometimes feel the need to do. Now part of the lucrative and mostly Texas-centric booking agency Red 11, when you head to a Shooter Jennings show, you know a bit more of what to expect, which is a mostly country show with some dalliances with country rock and more progressive stuff with Shooter standing behind a keyboard. The album also comes at a time when Shooter feels like he’s settling into who and what he is as an artist, especially live. is also the primary inspiration behind Shooter Jennings’ latest record Shooter, which claims and delivers on the promise of girding its guidance from Bocephus, and bringing that sound and style forward.
was saddled with such burdens and ever-present 2nd judgements from a very early age, and was still able to turn in an incredible career that eventually resulted in five separate Entertainer of the Year awards, and one of the most successful runs of any country artist in history. The other polarizing aspect surrounding Shooter is his propensity to follow his heart wherever he wishes to go, whether it happens to involve country music, or traverse another path of influence into the wilds of the music world, or even beyond, sometimes asking fans to navigate into places they’re uncomfortable with, losing some on the journey, while perhaps picking others up along the way. Though country music pedigree may deliver a son or daughter a major shot of attention when they decide to take up the family business, it also comes with unattainable expectations and unfair comparisons always swirling around their output. This is the result of being the son of a country hero whose legacy looms so large, the history of the man himself could never match the mythos. His authentic lyrics and straightforward delivery made for a memorable night of Outlaw Country.Just the name “Shooter” elicits strong opinions from people in country music. Jennings has a natural stage presence, and this comfortable demeanor seems to draw on his connection with the fans. Some of the highlights were I’m Left, Your Right, She’s Gone, Gunslinger and Good Time.
The band was tight, with lots of rock star moves and high energy. It seemed clear that this was not the first rodeo for most in attendance. The devoted masses in attendance seemed to know every word, even singing along to the Ramones song She Talks To Rainbows. Shooter seamlessly switched between the key boards, electric and acoustic guitars. The barrage of rock infused songs continued, with acoustic tunes sprinkled in for good measure. Shooter Jennings and his band came on around 10 PM and took off like a rocket with Electric Rodeo. Set List: Prairie – Needs – Talk – Rose – Porch – Ima – Blur – Hurricane – Love Jam – I Know You Rider > Truckin’ The highlight of their set was a 2 song tribute to the Grateful Dead, the traditional tune I Know You Rider into Truckin’. Multi talented bassist Joe Firstman also played the keyboards and six string. These guys hit notes that would make Mariah Carey jealous. Most remarkable are the soaring harmonies. The best way I could describe their sound is Funky Country/Southern Rock Jam Band. The Nashville based band has a Midwest connection, with Des Moines’ own Lucca Soria on lead guitar. He brought his unique talents to the Turf Club Saturday night. Shooter is a busy guy, dividing his time between touring, developing games and hosting “Shooter Jennings Electric Rodeo” on satellite radio. The albums highlight his range of influences country, rock and even 70’s dance music. Jennings cut 10 studio albums, 7 of them on his Black Country Rock Label.
Not just a singer/songwriter, Shooter played his dad Waylon in Walk The Line alongside Reese Witherspoon and Joaquin Phoenix. In 2005, he released Put The “O” Back In Country, which peaked at #22 on the Billboard Country Charts. Rumor has it that Shooter was asked to front Velvet Revolver, but decided instead to embark on a solo career. One of the first manifestations of this vision was 2001’s Stargunn, a rock band described as Skynard wrapped in Guns and Roses surrounded by The Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelies. These influences helped shape a unique musical vision. Shooter spent his youth on a tour bus, surrounded by some of the the biggest names in the industry. He is as diverse as that bar in Star Wars. The son of Country Music Royalty, he is not bound by his pedigree. If Shooter Jennings is anything, he is true to himself.
